Keystone Law is a multiple award-winning Top 50 UK firm that continues to make waves in the legal sector. The firm was founded upon a desire to do things differently. The original concept was to build a law firm in which lawyers could focus on working with clients, free from management obligations and administrative distractions, whilst being helped by teams of people who are there to support them. The concept endures to this day.

Our lawyers are ranked in Chambers & Partners and Legal 500, and in November 2020, we were named Law Firm of the Year at the prestigious The Lawyer Awards, the ultimate accolade in the legal profession. In January 2021, Keystone was also crowned Happiest Law Firm of the Year by RollOnFriday. Keystone lawyers and those who support them are known to be some of the most satisfied and driven individuals in the legal profession.

The Healthcare team requires a Legal Assistant to work in its busy, successful and highly-regarded practice. The role presents significant opportunities to support a unique team at the forefront of healthcare litigation which has enjoyed significant success and acts for a wide range of clients (insurers, insureds, regulators, Royal Colleges, defence organisations, PCTs and individual medical professionals) on the defence side.

Working in a team environment, where the whole team works fully remotely, the role involves:

  • Working in a fast-paced environment to support the team who advise and represent healthcare professionals (and their insurers) in:
    • Healthcare regulatory proceedings, mostly before the GMC, but also including the GDC, HCPC, NMC and other healthcare regulators;
    • Coroner’s Inquests;
    • NHS Trust MHPS and disciplinary proceedings;
    • Defending clinical negligence claims made against a range of healthcare professionals including doctors, surgeons, nurses, dentists and allied health professionals;
    • Running notification/first notification of loss type services.
  • Preparing bundles and initial briefing packs for the team on new instructions
  • Preparing bundles for hearings, conferences with Counsel, instructions to experts etc;
  • Attending and taking notes (or transcribing notes) of hearings (nearly all remote), conferences and meetings;
  • Sending some routine, templated communications to clients;
  • Preparing retainer letters for clients;
  • Assisting with the team’s IT systems, including in keeping our filing and case management system up to date;
  • Assisting the team’s PA with the business and finance side of the practice as well as with supporting the smooth functioning of the team;
  • Assisting with the team’s diary management, including diarising litigation deadlines;
  • Assisting members of the team with preparing for and delivering training, seminars and talks, including preparing PowerPoint slides.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a prestigious firm and team, assisting with quality work including on behalf of leading insurers and surgeons. The position provides long-term stability with plenty of day-to-day variety so that it will remain stimulating long-term.

The successful candidate will have the following attributes:

  • Experience of healthcare litigation would be very helpful (defendant clinical negligence claims and/or healthcare regulatory cases – experience of both is preferred)
  • Experience of insurance or of insurer-funded work would be beneficial, but is not essential
  • Alternatively, experience as a medical or legal secretary may helpful. This role would be an exciting opportunity to expand your skillset whilst utilising the skills already developed.
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail
  • Excellent organisational and general ‘office’ skills, including fast typing and familiarity with the main IT systems (Microsoft Office, including Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Experience with using appropriate AI tools to drive efficiency
  • Motivation and a strong work ethic
  • Confidence, resilience and tenacity
  • An ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced litigation environment, balancing the demands of busy practitioners serving demanding clients
  • An ability to work pro-actively and demonstrate initiative without constant direction, albeit under close supervision
  • Strong organisational skills
  • A strong desire to work in a fully remote role, in a small team, albeit with periodic opportunities to meet and socialise in person.

We will provide training. If you feel you have the requisite skills and experience for which we are looking and would enjoy working for an expanding and forward-thinking law firm, then please get in touch today.
