Keystone Law has launched Origin, a purpose-built AI-powered source-of-funds enquiry tool designed to make an important part of the client onboarding and due diligence process simpler, clearer, and more consistent.

For clients and third-party funders, source-of-funds enquiries can involve significant back-and-forth as lawyers establish where funds have come from and what supporting evidence is required. Origin provides a secure digital process that guides users through the enquiry, helping them understand from the outset what information and documentation they need to provide.

The tool identifies and requests relevant supporting evidence before bringing the information together into a clear, documented report for the Keystone lawyer handling the matter. This can reduce unnecessary administration and follow-up enquiries, creating a more straightforward experience for clients while giving lawyers a clearer basis on which to assess risk.

Origin is believed to be among the first solutions of its kind in the legal market. It uses AI to bring greater structure and consistency to source-of-funds enquiries, an area of anti-money laundering compliance that has traditionally depended heavily on individual judgement.

Importantly, the technology supports rather than replaces professional judgement. Keystone lawyers remain responsible for reviewing the information and evidence provided, identifying any gaps or inconsistencies, making further enquiries where necessary, and ultimately deciding whether it is appropriate to proceed.

Origin has also been designed to evolve as financial crime risks change. Its assessment framework can be updated to reflect emerging money laundering vulnerabilities, typologies, and risk indicators, allowing Keystone to apply those developments consistently across relevant matters.

James Knight, Founder and CEO of Keystone Law, said:

“Origin reflects Keystone’s practical approach to innovation. We are investing in technology that removes unnecessary friction for our lawyers and clients while maintaining the professional judgement and careful oversight that complex legal work requires.

“It is ultimately about making an important compliance process work better for our clients. Source-of-funds enquiries are necessary, but they should be as clear and straightforward as possible. Origin helps clients understand what information is required from them while reducing unnecessary back-and-forth.”

Maurice Tunney, IT Director at Keystone Law, added:

“What makes Origin particularly interesting from a technology perspective is the way it brings together multiple AI agents within a single, structured process. Each has a specific role in analysing information and evidence, allowing the technology to handle complexity in a controlled and consistent way while keeping the lawyer firmly in control.”

Luke Haddon, Money Laundering Reporting Officer at Keystone Law, said:

“Effective source-of-funds assessment is not simply about collecting documents; it is about understanding the information provided, identifying potential risk indicators, and knowing when

further enquiries are required. Origin supports that process by helping lawyers gather information in a more structured and consistent way, while ensuring that the ultimate assessment remains a matter for professional judgement.”
