Paul is a commercial media lawyer who advises on the acquisition, protection, and exploitation of intellectual property rights, particularly in media businesses.

Paul specialises in advising clients on theatrical productions (especially musicals), music, publishing, TV, film, sponsorship, sports (especially horseracing and breeding) and general non-contentious commercial matters. He advises producers as well as artists, writers and performers.

Paul also conducts audits on IP and commercial rights and advises start-ups on protecting their intellectual property and related content and commercial agreements.

Expertise

Paul has extensive experience advising on intellectual property, rights acquisitions, and production agreements across theatre, TV, film, and publishing. His work spans high-profile entertainment projects and media promotions.

Experience

  • Advised Saturday Night Fever on acquisition of rights, creative team agreements, sound track agreements, merchandising, and theatre.
  • Advice on The King’s Speech film option agreement and screenplay writer’s agreement.
  • Advised on the new musical, acquisition of rights, theatre agreement, funding structures, and creative team agreements of Stiletto.
  • Promotional campaigns and related contracts for the National Citizen Service Trust (in-house role).

Paul has extensive experience in the sports sector, particularly in horseracing and equine ventures. He has advised on commercial, regulatory, and syndicate structuring across the British racing industries.

Experience

  • Advised British Horseracing Board Limited on commercial, sponsorship, data and betting arrangements
  • Provided commercial and intellectual property advice in structuring the creation of a club and syndicates for a Middle East-based equine lifestyle opportunity all in accordance with British Horseracing Authority rules
  • Assisted on a review of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association’s standard terms for a mare boarding agreement and the industry-standard terms for the sale of stallion nominations, on both 1st October and Live foal terms, and an outline foal share agreement.

Paul’s music law expertise includes artist agreements, soundtrack rights, and label acquisitions. He advises both theatrical and recorded music clients on creative industry transactions.

  • Advised Roadtrip on various band matters.
  • Cast album agreements for theatre shows and concept albums.
