Tim is a highly experienced solicitor with approaching 40 years’ expertise in advising business owners and wealthy individuals on a wide range of Private Client matters.

Tim specialises in succession planning for complex and multi-generational family businesses. He regularly advises on inheritance tax planning more generally, via wills, the creation, administration and cessation of trusts, and the establishment and administration of powers of attorney.

Expertise

Tim advises individuals and business owners on succession strategies and inheritance tax planning, ensuring smooth intergenerational wealth transfer and protection of family assets through tailored, tax-efficient solutions.

Experience

  • Advised a wealthy majority shareholder of an energy-sector business on inheritance tax planning, share ownership protection, and business continuity, working with Corporate colleagues on exit strategy, timing, and structure.
  • Provided ongoing advice to the widow of a former multi-plc managing director (£30M+ estate) on inheritance tax planning and family provision, in close collaboration with her accountant.
  • Advised an eminent Cambridge professor on inheritance tax planning strategies, including a double trust scheme, and later acted for his executors in estate administration and HMRC negotiations.
  • Advised a prestigious Cambridge-property-owning company director on evolving inheritance tax planning, including restructuring of property ownership and lifetime gifting, in collaboration with accountants and wealth managers.

Tim is experienced in drafting wills and creating trusts to reflect clients’ wishes, and advises on powers of attorney to support lifetime planning and ensure continuity in decision-making.

Experience

  • Worked with Corporate colleagues and accountants to restructure a family business, reviewing and reorganising family trusts, and implementing new wills and powers of attorney to align with succession goals.
  • Advised a wealthy majority shareholder of an energy-sector business on wills and the creation of trusts aligned with his business exit and continuity strategy.
  • Provided advice to multiple clients on the value and asset management aspects of powers of attorney.
  • Provided ongoing advice to the widow of a former multi-plc managing director on will structuring and the use of trusts as part of lifetime and estate planning.

Tim advises beneficiaries and executors on deeds of variation to restructure estates after death.

  • Advised multiple clients on deeds of variation of wills and intestacies to achieve inheritance tax savings and manage family wealth effectively.
  • Advised an eminent Cambridge professor’s executors on post-death matters, including estate administration and HMRC discussions following a complex inheritance tax strategy.
