George is an international dispute resolution specialist who resolves high-value and complex multijurisdictional disputes. He is a Solicitor Advocate who spends most of his time involved in arbitration. Throughout his career, George has advised and acted for (and against) governments, commercial entities, and individuals from a wide range of countries.

George is regularly engaged in international arbitrations as counsel, chair, co-arbitrator, and sole arbitrator under the ICC, LCIA, LMAA, VIAC, ISTAC, GAFTA,  SCC, and ICSID rules, sitting in London, Athens, Geneva, Stockholm, Istanbul, and Washington DC. He has experience in aviation, construction, energy, trade, and investment treaty arbitrations.

George has a very strong maritime background, having been a partner for many years in a leading London-based shipping law firm. He has been involved in over 100 maritime arbitrations.

George works in both Russian and Greek.

Expertise

George advises on international arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR), supporting clients in resolving complex cross-border and domestic disputes.

Experience

  • Appointed as arbitrator in an investment treaty and construction arbitration – Garanti Koza LLP v Turkmenistan ICSID Case No. ARB/11/20 ($100 million).
  • Acted for a Central Asian country in a multimillion-dollar investment dispute in an LCIA arbitration.
  • Arbitrator in two unrelated proceedings under the LMAA Terms in a dispute arising out of a luxury yacht charter with seat in London.
  • Arbitrator in over 70 proceedings under the LMAA Terms in disputes arising out of charterparties with seats in London.
  • Arbitrator in a dispute arising out of a contract for the sale of coal between a Swiss company and a Russian company under the LCIA Rules with seat in London.
  • Emergency sole arbitrator in proceedings for a dispute under a distribution agreement involving pharmaceutical products, under the Istanbul Arbitration Centre (ISTAC) Rules with seat in Istanbul.
  • Chairman of a tribunal under the VIAC rules.
  • Led the legal team in a large dispute under the GAFTA rules, and the GAFTA Appeal procedure arising out of the sale of corn to an Iraqi buyer.

George advises on marine insurance, supporting clients in managing risks, claims, and liabilities related to maritime operations and commercial marine activities.

Experience

  • Successfully acted in the English High Court in an important marine insurance case on behalf of a Singapore company to recover a multimillion-dollar claim against Baominh Insurance Corporation of Vietnam arising out of the total loss of a floating dock.
  • Acted for a Ukrainian shipowners with respect to a war risk policy of insurance following the seizure of a vessel in Mariupol by the Russian navy.
  • Acted for voyage charterers in disputes with ship owners arising out of alleged ice damage to the ship’s propeller following a call to Saint Petersburg, Russia.
  • Resolved a complex series of disputes between shipowners and charterers under several bareboat charterparties with security attached in Panama, Turkey, and Bulgaria.

George advises on shipping and maritime matters, assisting clients with vessel operations, commercial contracts, and regulatory compliance to navigate complex international and domestic shipping environments effectively.

Experience

  • Acted for numerous ship owners and charterers in dozens of LMAA arbitrations and English High Court actions.
  • Negotiated a multimillion-dollar settlement between numerous claimants and a Ukrainian state entity with multiple vessels detained in India.
  • Negotiated a widely reported settlement agreement between Delta Tankers and Transneft arising out of a port claim in Primorsk, Russia.
  • Represented a Spanish company in an LMAA arbitration under a TOWCON agreement.
  • Represented a Polish company in an LMAA arbitration arising out of a PROJECTCON form.

George advises on aviation matters, assisting clients with disputes relating to aviation maintenance and management agreements.

Experience

  • Acted for a Maltese company in disputes arising out of an aircraft maintenance services agreement.
  • Advised on resolution of a disputes under a long-term agreement to provide continuing airworthiness management in Dubai.
  • Resolved disputes under an agreement with respect to aircraft base maintenance slots.
  • Advised and assisted in the resolution of disputes under an aircraft painting and refurbishment agreement.
  • Obtained judgement against a defaulter under an aircraft double engine change and maintenance agreement.
  • Advised on the long-term lease of three aircraft which were potentially effected by sanctions.
