Keystone Law is delighted to announce that consultant solicitor Matheu Smith has been appointed as a fee-paid First-tier Tribunal Judge assigned to the Tax Chamber following an open competition run by the Judicial Appointments Commission.
Matheu has nearly 20 years’ experience of dealing with tax disputes. He advises on all aspects of the statutory appeal processes for all direct and indirect taxes and customs duties, and all other forms of litigation and ADR processes which feature tax-related issues, such as Insolvency Act proceedings.
Matheu will sit as a Judge for at least 30 days per year and perform the role alongside his practice at Keystone Law.
Judges in the Tax Chamber hear appeals by individuals, corporate bodies and organisations against decisions made by HMRC relating to taxes both direct (such as Income Tax, Corporation Tax, Capital Gains Tax, PAYE and NICs) and indirect (such as VAT and Stamp Duty Land Tax) and duties (such as customs duty and excise duty). These can also include appeals against penalties imposed by HMRC.
